Large-format marble pavers require a specialized technique called mud-set installation to ensure the surface of the pool deck lasts a long time and doesn’t crack. Our team at Exotic Pavers decided to mud-set the marble directly onto the existing concrete pool deck instead of using a standard sand-set layout. This method has many advantages, especially for large marble pavers, and the process involves the following:

Pre-Installation Slab Preparation

We carefully cleaned, leveled, and prepared the existing concrete so that it was shaped correctly, ensuring the mortar bed bonded well. This step is important because any dirt, uneven surfaces, or leftover materials can affect the quality of the installation over time. Proper slab preparation on a luxurious pool deck helps ensure the large marble pavers stay in place and don’t crack in the future.  

Thick Mortar Bedding

We applied a uniform layer of a specially formulated mud-set mortar bed over the existing concrete slab in an even layer. This ensures that the surface stays consistently uniform, giving the outdoor living space a neat and luxurious appearance. It essentially keeps all the pavers even with one another (A slight slope helps keep water from pooling on the surface), preventing raised edges or height differences between adjacent pavers.

Specialist Joint Grouting

Once the mortar had completely dried, we carefully grouted every joint between the pavers to achieve a high-end finish. This keeps water from seeping beneath the marble pavers, and it helps maintain the pristine look of this waterfront property. It locks the massive patio structure together and blocks weed growth so the marble pool deck can maintain its flawless appearance well into the future.
